Winter Emergency Preparedness
| Read time: 1 min
Preparing for emergencies like power outages, storms or building alerts is a smart move, especially in colder months. The Canadian government’s emergency preparedness guidelines highlight the importance of having an emergency kit and household plan in advance.
- Assemble an emergency kit: Stock flashlights with extra batteries, a portable radio, a power bank, bottled water, non-perishable food, blankets, and any essential medications in an easy-to-reach spot.
- Stay informed: Make sure you have a device that can receive alerts from the Alert Ready service so you don’t miss important updates during storms or outages.
- Prepare your home systems: Avoid using outdoor cooking equipment indoors, and keep your fridge and freezer closed to preserve food. If you rely on a fireplace, ensure it has been serviced before winter begins.
- Know your evacuation plan: Review your building’s fire safety procedures and identify at least two exits so you can respond quickly if needed.
Being ready now means less stress later. A few minutes of preparation today can make a big difference when winter storms hit.
