Winter in Manitoba brings some challenges for people, including transportation issues. Freezing rain, drifting snow and extreme cold can cause hazardous road conditions for new and veteran drivers alike.

While weather is beyond our control, there are several things you can do to ensure you are prepared should your car get stuck or break down in the winter months. Whether you are a new driver, new to Manitoban winters, or have been driving here for years, these are some winter driving preparedness tips:

• Keep your gas tank half full – This limits the danger of running out of gas in the event you get stuck.
• Pack an emergency preparedness kit – This kit could include:
  • Jumper cables
  • Tow rope
  • Warm clothes and boots
  • Fully charged cell phone or in-car phone charger
  • Extra bottle of winter windshield washer fluid
  • Bag of road salt, sand, or cat litter (for traction under stuck or slipping tires)
  • Ice scraper and snow brush
  • Some non-perishable food items and water
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Warm blanket
• Purchase a CAA membership or equivalent – Memberships like these provide peace of mind and the first step in an action plan if you are stuck on the side of the road.
